Did you know that the third week in May is Salt Awareness Week?

Heart attacks and strokes are the biggest causes of death and disability in the UK.

With two people suffering from these often-debilitating conditions every 5 minutes, the strain this is having, not only on the individual and their families, but on our struggling NHS cannot be ignored.

Most cases are entirely preventable, and so it’s vital we all take measures to improve our health and prevent these events from happening in the first place. It’s a little-known fact that eating less salt is one of the quickest and most effective ways of improving our health, with just 1 less ‘pinch’ a day preventing over 4,000 heart attacks and strokes every year in the UK. But how can we cut back on our salt, when everything we buy is full of it?

From sliced bread to biscuits, Friday night takeaways to ‘healthy’ salads, everything has added salt. In fact, three quarters of the salt we eat is already in the foods we buy, and it’s impossible to take it out once it’s been added in.

Read the labels and try to reduce your daily salt intake to no more than 6 grams per day or, one level teaspoon.

Another fun filled week at Beddell House saw our residents enjoying live entertainment from a local twelve piece band Frets on the Tyne.  From the smiles on their faces we can see the band were enjoyed by both residents and staff.

A huge thank you to the band who will certainly be welcomed back another time.  Keep rockin boys!

This week 13th – 19th May is Mental Health Awareness Week 2024.

This year’s theme is “Moving more for our mental health”.

One of the most important things we can do to help protect our mental health is regular movement.  Playing your favourite sport, shopping around town or even a short 10 minutes of brisk walking can boost our mood and increase our mental alertness and energy.  Regular physical activity is known to improve our mental health, quality of life and wellbeing, it can also prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes and breast and colon cancers.

A few small changes can make a big difference:

  • Take the stairs instead of the lift (for at least part of the way).
  • Get off public transport one stop earlier and walk home.
  • Walk whenever it is safe to do so instead of taking the car.
  • Meet with friends for a look around your local area.
  • Don’t put off booking that tennis court, the bowling green, a round of golf, whatever your sport, the weather is improving!

Remember, May is all about moving more for our mental health.

Our Mission:

To provide relief in need to people living in the beneficial area through the provision of care, housing and grant funding.

Our Vision:

To improve quality of life for all vulnerable people.

Our Core Values:

Integrity, quality, care, dignity and respect.

These values will run through everything we do.
