Along with much of the rest of the country, Beddell House Care Home also marked the date with celebrations, coronation activities and live entertainment.
In the lead up to the big day, residents made decorations and cakes, participated in quizzes and activities and reminisced fondly on the last Coronation of Queen Elizabeth the second in 1953 and wrote down their childhood memories,
R Dawson who was just 15 years old on the Queen’s Coronation Day recalled, “I went to my Aunt’s pub in Ludworth. She had a new cabinet TV. It was raining heavily, and I sat at the front of the TV all day. I thought it was wonderful and the Queen looked splendid in her crown. It was a special day with family.”
Another resident, N Bowden who was 14 at the time said, “We had tables down the street with cakes on and we had union jack flags. About 12pm it started to rain! There was only two people in the street with TV’s so both houses were full!”
The day before the Kings Coronation, residents were treated to a live performance in the Orangery by Sweetheart Kay from ‘Wor Vera.’ She sang a selection of classic hits for our residents to sing-along to.
On the day of the Coronation, residents sat in the Cinema Room and Lounge to watch the King and Queen consort travel to Westminster Abbey in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach to be officially crowned King and Queen in a spectacular service.
Tanya Porthouse, Manager of Beddell House said: “We had great fun planning for the Coronation and it was fantastic to see the smiles on everyone’s faces when we came together to celebrate such a joyous occasion. We are always looking for new ways to enrich our residents’ lives. Celebrating a milestone moment, such as the Coronation, is the perfect opportunity to create a sense of continuity and belonging for our residents.”
